Who is Luis Lacalle Pou?
Luis Lacalle Pou is a Uruguayan lawyer and politician who served as President of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay from March 2020 to March 2025. Before assuming the presidency, he had an extensive parliamentary career within the National Party, holding various positions and participating in his country’s political life for more than two decades.
He graduated with a law degree and began his political career as a representative for the department of Canelones. He later served as president of the House of Representatives, a senator, and a presidential candidate. In 2019, he won the runoff election as the leader of a coalition of various parties and took office as president in March 2020 to serve a five-year constitutional term.
From its very first weeks, his term coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic. During his administration, policies and reforms related to security, education, the economy, public administration, and international relations were implemented, several of which were included in the Urgent Consideration Act. These measures were the subject of political and social debate, and some of their provisions were put to a referendum in 2022.
His constitutional term ended on March 1, 2025. After leaving the presidency, he continued to engage in public activities, and in 2026 he also resumed his involvement in party politics. His career combines legislative and executive experience, enabling him to address issues related to government administration, democratic institutions, decision-making, consensus-building, and leadership during times of crisis.
