How do I hire Juan Manuel Santos?
Who is Juan Manuel Santos?
Juan Manuel Santos Calderón is a Colombian politician, economist, and professor, recognized worldwide for having served as President of the Republic of Colombia for two terms (2010–2018) and, above all, for having been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016. His career is a clear example of a life dedicated to public service, culminating in a courageous effort to end the internal armed conflict with the FARC-EP guerrilla group that had lasted for more than half a century.
Santos comes from one of Colombia’s most traditional families, with ties to journalism (his family founded the newspaper El Tiempo) and politics. He studied economics and business administration and took graduate courses at elite institutions such as the London School of Economics and Harvard University. Before becoming president, he entered politics as Minister of Foreign Trade and, later, as Minister of Finance. He was also a key figure in Álvaro Uribe’s administration, where he served as Minister of Defense (2006–2009), adopting a “hard-line” stance against armed groups.
The central milestone of his presidency was the peace process with the FARC-EP, which began in secret and led to the signing of the Final Agreement for the Termination of the Conflict in 2016. Despite the negative outcome of the initial referendum, Santos persisted in renegotiating the agreement, which was ratified by Congress. This effort for peace, which ended a war that left hundreds of thousands dead and millions displaced, earned him the Nobel Peace Prize, an honor that underscored the value of reconciliation and diplomacy.
Today, former President Juan Manuel Santos is an influential figure on the global stage, serving as a member of The Elders, a group of world leaders, and as a visiting professor at institutions such as the University of Oxford and Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. His legacy is defined by his ability to transform a political career marked by confrontation into a leadership focused on peace, conservation, and justice.
