Who is Guillermo Ortiz Martínez?
Guillermo Ortiz Martínez is a prominent Mexican economist, professor, and politician with an impressive track record in both the public and private sectors. His career is a testament to strategic vision, technical rigor, and leadership in times of crisis, which has established him as one of the most influential figures in Mexico’s financial and economic spheres, as well as on the international stage. With a solid academic background, including a bachelor’s degree in economics from UNAM and a master’s and doctorate in economics from Stanford University, Ortiz has dedicated himself to economic stabilization and the promotion of investment in his country.
His career in public service began at the Bank of Mexico, and he subsequently held various positions at the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit. In 1994, during the presidency of Ernesto Zedillo, he was appointed Secretary of Finance and Public Credit in the midst of one of the most severe financial crises in Mexico’s history, known as the “Tequila Effect.” His tenure focused on implementing an ambitious stabilization plan, which laid the groundwork for economic recovery and the modernization of the Mexican financial system.
In 1998, Ortiz was appointed Governor of the Bank of Mexico, a position he held for 12 years, until 2009. During his tenure, he was noted for his staunch defense of the central bank’s independence and his commitment to controlling inflation, which earned him the respect of his international colleagues. His leadership was instrumental in maintaining macroeconomic stability during a period of major global upheaval. In 2009, he was elected Chairman of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), the highest position a Latin American has ever held at that institution.
Following his career in the public sector, Guillermo Ortiz has focused on consulting and working in the private sector, serving as chairman of Grupo Financiero Banorte. He is also a member of the Group of Thirty, a private international organization that brings together the world’s most influential economists, including Paul Krugman and former President Ernesto Zedillo.
