Guillermo Ortiz MartÃnez is a prominent Mexican economist, professor, and politician with a remarkable career in both the public and private sectors. With a solid academic background, including a bachelor's degree in economics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), a master's degree, and a doctorate in economics from Stanford University, Ortiz has dedicated himself to economic stabilization and the promotion of investment in his country.
His career in public administration began at the Bank of Mexico, and he subsequently held various positions at the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit. In 1994, during the presidency of Ernesto Zedillo, he was appointed Secretary of Finance and Public Credit amidst one of the most severe financial crises in Mexican history, known as the "Tequila Effect." His tenure focused on implementing an ambitious stabilization plan, which laid the groundwork for economic recovery and the modernization of the Mexican financial system.
In 1998, Ortiz was appointed Governor of the Bank of Mexico, a position he held for 12 years, until 2009. During his tenure, he distinguished himself through his staunch defense of the central bank's autonomy and his commitment to controlling inflation, earning him the respect of his international colleagues. His leadership was fundamental in maintaining macroeconomic stability during a period of significant global change. In 2009, he was elected President of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), the highest position ever held by a Latin American at that institution.
