Gustavo Alfaro

Gustavo Alfaro is a former Argentine soccer player, soccer coach, and sports commentator with an extensive and varied career coaching clubs and national teams in Latin America and the Middle East. He is known for his methodical style, his focus on tactical strategy, and his ability to work with a wide variety of teams, adapting his methods to the resources available.

Alfaro began his playing career as a midfielder, but his most significant impact has been as a coach, a role he took on in 1992. His career has included stints with numerous Argentine clubs, such as Atlético de Rafaela (where he made his coaching debut), Olimpo, Quilmes (with whom he secured promotion in 2003), San Lorenzo, Rosario Central, Tigre, and Huracán. His most notable stint in Argentina was with Arsenal de Sarandí, a modest club that he led to national and international titles, including the Copa Sudamericana, marking a milestone in the club’s history.

In addition to his success with club teams, Alfaro managed Boca Juniors in 2019, one of the most high-pressure periods of his career. He also ventured into international soccer, managing Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia. However, his greatest international recognition comes from his work with national teams. He led the Ecuador national team through the qualifying process and at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, achieving a historic qualification and a memorable run in the tournament.

After his stint in Ecuador, Alfaro took over as head coach of the Costa Rican national team in late 2023, and in 2024, he was officially named head coach of the Paraguayan national team, cementing his reputation as a specialist in national team development and managing teams under intense pressure.
