Biography / Speaker Info

Felipe Larraín Bascuñán is a Chilean economist, academic and politician who has played a fundamental role in the economic policy of his country, especially as Minister of Finance in two periods of Chile's recent history. His career is synonymous with technical rigor and commitment to sustainable economic development, which has positioned him as one of the most respected figures in the field of public finance in Latin America. With a PhD in Economics from Harvard University, he has combined his academic vision with deep experience in public management.

His first stage as Minister of Finance, during the first government of Sebastián Piñera (2010-2014), was marked by the reconstruction of the country after the devastating earthquake of 2010. During this period, Larraín led the implementation of a responsible fiscal policy and an agenda of structural reforms that laid the foundations for a period of growth and economic stability. His administration was characterized by caution in public spending, the promotion of private investment and a long-term vision that sought to protect the Chilean economy from external fluctuations.

Subsequently, in the second term of Sebastián Piñera (2018-2019), he returned to the Treasury portfolio. In this role, he continued with a policy of austerity and fiscal discipline, seeking to consolidate the State's finances and promote a favorable environment for investment. Despite his short tenure in this second term, his work was crucial for the approval of the tax reform and the modernization of public management, demonstrating his ability to negotiate and his commitment to institutions.

In addition to his career in politics, Larraín has been a prolific academic. He is a professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and has published numerous articles and books on macroeconomics, development and growth, consolidating his role as an influential intellectual. His academic work has not only enriched the economic debate in Chile, but has also served as a guide for the formulation of public policies in other countries in the region. His career is a testament to the power of fiscal discipline, technical knowledge and visionary leadership to build a stronger and more resilient economy.
