Biography / Speaker Info
Enrique Peña Nieto is a Mexican politician who was president of Mexico from 2012 to 2018. He holds a law degree from Universidad Panamericana and an MBA from Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM).
Peña Nieto began his political career in the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), where he rose quickly. He was a local deputy in the State of Mexico and held key positions in the state government before being elected governor of the State of Mexico in 2005. His tenure as governor was highlighted by the implementation of infrastructure projects and social programs, which gave him a notable national projection.
As president, he led a government marked by the approval of the so-called Pact for Mexico, a multi-party agreement that promoted important structural reforms in key sectors such as education, telecommunications, energy and finance. These reforms sought to modernize the country and attract investment, although they faced criticism for their implementation and results.
During his term, Peña Nieto also faced major challenges, such as the case of the 43 missing students from Ayotzinapa, allegations of corruption in his administration, and the weakening of public security in several regions of the country. These problems significantly impacted his image and political legacy.
Although his administration was marked by legislative achievements, his figure continues to generate divisions in Mexican public opinion, standing out both for his ability to negotiate historic reforms and for the scandals and controversies that tarnished his presidency.
