Who is Felipe Pigna?
Felipe Isidro Pigna is a renowned Argentine professor, writer, and popularizer of history, considered one of the most influential figures in making his country’s history accessible to the general public. Born in Mercedes, in the province of Buenos Aires, in 1959, he graduated with a degree in history from the “Dr. Joaquín V. González” Higher Institute of Teacher Education. His work has focused on reinterpreting Argentina’s past, demystifying historical figures and events, and making them accessible to the general public.
His impact as a popularizer of history came to fruition with the publication of his most iconic work: the series *The Myths of Argentine History* (launched in 2004), which became a publishing phenomenon and topped the bestseller lists for years. Through this and other titles, such as Evita and La voz del Gran Jefe: Vida y pensamiento de José de San Martín, Pigna has inspired millions of Argentines to approach historical knowledge from a critical and renewed perspective.
Pigna has brought history to all forms of media. On television, he has hosted and appeared on numerous series, notably *Algo habrán hecho por la historia argentina* (alongside Mario Pergolini), as well as programs such as *Noticias de ayer* and *El espejo retrovisor* on Televisión Pública. On the radio, he has led award-winning series such as Historias de nuestra historia on Radio Nacional. Additionally, he is a columnist for various print media outlets and serves as editor-in-chief of Caras y Caretas magazine and the website elhistoriador.com.ar, Argentina’s most-visited history site.
His prolific work has been widely recognized, including the Konex Award in the Outreach category (2017) and the Manuel Alvar Award in Madrid for his contribution to history and the humanities. As an intellectual, Pigna directs the Center for the Dissemination of Argentine History at the National University of General San Martín (UNSAM). With a body of work spanning more than fifteen books and numerous audiovisual productions, Felipe Pigna has fulfilled the “obligation to disseminate” history, making the past a living subject that is relevant to the present.
