Who is Miguel Kiguel?
Miguel Kiguel laid the foundation for his academic career with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), which he complemented with a Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University in the United States. After earning his doctorate, he served as a professor at prestigious U.S. universities such as the University of Maryland and Georgetown University, which gave him a deep understanding of economic theory and monetary policy. He subsequently continued his teaching and research work at the Center for Macroeconomic Studies of Argentina (CEMA) and at Torcuato Di Tella University.
His extensive career in the public and multilateral sectors includes senior leadership roles in the Argentine government, where he served as Undersecretary of Finance at the Ministry of Economy and Deputy General Manager of Economics and Finance at the Central Bank of Argentina. Additionally, he served as President of Banco Hipotecario S.A., a key position within the financial system. Internationally, he worked as a Senior Economist at the World Bank and as a researcher at the Institute for International Economics in Washington, D.C., gaining a global perspective on crisis management and stabilization policies.
Kiguel is currently the CEO of Econviews, an economic and financial consulting firm that advises large corporations, financial institutions in Argentina and abroad, and Latin American governments. His firm is known for combining rigorous macroeconomic analysis with a deep understanding of financial markets and risk. He is a highly sought-after consultant who focuses on critical issues such as inflation, exchange rate policies, and the persistent challenges facing the Argentine economy.
The economist has detailed much of his analysis of his country’s economic history in his book *Argentine Economic Crises: A History of Adjustments and Imbalances*. Through his publications and lectures, Kiguel consistently highlights the high costs Argentina pays for its recurring tendency to deviate from market principles and seek shortcuts, a path that only leads to repeated cycles of high inflation and stagnation.
