Biography / Speaker Info

Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de León is a Mexican economist and politician who served as President of Mexico from 1994 to 2000. His career is a clear example of a political career marked by technical rigor, economic discipline and a vision of state that led him to face and overcome one of the most serious financial crises in the modern history of his country, known as the "Tequila Effect". With a solid academic background, including a doctorate in Economics from Yale University, Zedillo has positioned himself as one of the most relevant figures in Mexican politics in the 20th century.

His career in public administration began at the Bank of Mexico and, subsequently, he held various positions in the Secretariat of Programming and Budget, where he stood out for his knowledge of fiscal policy. In 1994, he was elected presidential candidate for the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), a party that had ruled the country for more than seven decades. After winning the election, he took office in the midst of a deep economic crisis. His administration focused on implementing an ambitious stabilization plan and opening up the economy, which laid the foundations for a period of growth and order.

During his term, Zedillo promoted a series of historic reforms in areas such as politics, the economy and justice. The electoral reform, in particular, was one of the most important, as it guaranteed greater transparency in the elections and laid the foundations for the alternation of power, a milestone that put an end to the PRI's hegemony. In addition, his government was characterized by caution in public spending, the privatization of state-owned companies and the promotion of private investment, which contributed to macroeconomic stability and the modernization of the Mexican economy.

After leaving the presidency, Ernesto Zedillo has dedicated himself to teaching and participating in high-level international forums. He is a professor at Yale University and has been director of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization. His legacy is measured by his ability to lead the country in a time of deep crisis, promote democracy and lay the foundations for political alternation.
