Enrique Krauze

Enrique Krauze is a Mexican historian, essayist, editor, and critic, considered one of the most important and respected intellectual voices in Mexico and the Spanish-speaking world. His extensive body of work has focused on the study of Mexico’s modern history, with a particular emphasis on biography, caudillismo, and political culture.

His solid academic background includes a degree in Industrial Engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and, later, a Ph.D. in History from El Colegio de México, demonstrating his transition from the exact sciences to the humanities. In 1976, he published his first book, *Caudillos Culturales en la Revolución Mexicana* (Cultural Leaders in the Mexican Revolution), a seminal work that earned him the Magda Donato Prize and set the tone for his future work in the biographical analysis of historical figures.

His career took off when he joined the staff of the prestigious magazine *Vuelta*, founded by Octavio Paz, where he served as editorial secretary and deputy director until its closure. Following this experience, Krauze founded the Clío publishing house in 1992 and, in 1999, launched the cultural and political magazine *Letras Libres*, which is published in Mexico and Spain and has become an indispensable reference in intellectual debate in Spanish.

He is a member of the Mexican Academy of History and El Colegio Nacional, and his work has received numerous international awards, including the Comillas Prize for Biography in Spain for his book *Siglo de caudillos*. Krauze has been a visiting professor at prestigious universities such as Oxford and Princeton, and his essays have appeared in major international publications. His legacy is a body of work that is essential for understanding the complex relationship between power, history, and culture in modern Mexico.
