Biography / Speaker Info
Jorge Drexler is an influential Uruguayan musician, composer, author and teacher, world renowned for his unique style that fuses rioplatense rhythms, pop and alternative rock with a deep poetic sensibility. His career is a clear example of a career that intertwines medicine - his initial profession as an otolaryngologist - with the art of composition. With a unique ability to bridge cultures and an introspective vision of identity, Drexler has positioned himself as one of the most respected singer-songwriters in Ibero-American music.
Born in Montevideo in 1964, he began studying piano and classical guitar at an early age. Despite graduating as a doctor and practicing briefly, his passion for music led him to change course. In 1995, he moved to Spain, invited by JoaquÃn Sabina, a move that marked the international take-off of his career. His work has been characterized by a constant experimentation with digital recording and collaboration with artists from diverse backgrounds, such as Caetano Veloso, Ana Tijoux and C. Tangana.
Drexler's global recognition came in 2005 when his song "Al otro lado del rÃo", composed for the film Diarios de motocicleta, won the Oscar for Best Original Song. This was a historic milestone, as it was the first non-English language song to win this award. Subsequently, his album Tinta y Tiempo swept the Latin Grammy 2022, winning seven awards, and his work in general has been recognized with a total of sixteen Latin Grammys, a Goya Award and multiple other distinctions.
In addition to his musical facet, Drexler is a sought-after lecturer, famous for his TED Talk in Spanish on "PoesÃa, música e identidad" (Poetry, Music and Identity). His legacy is measured by his immense contribution to global music, his ability to use his art as a vehicle for philosophical reflection, and his role as an Ibero-American Ambassador of Culture. Drexler's career is a testament to the fact that intellectual curiosity, perseverance and authenticity are the keys to achieving artistic greatness and leaving a lasting mark.
