Who is Mario Sepúlveda?
Mario Sepúlveda had a long 16-year career in mining, distinguishing himself as a heavy equipment operator. His life took a 180-degree turn on August 5, 2010, when a massive cave-in at the San José mine, located in the Atacama Desert in Chile, left 33 miners trapped more than 700 meters underground. During the 69 days the group remained underground, Sepúlveda spontaneously emerged as the charismatic leader and primary source of emotional support for his colleagues, earning the nickname “Super Mario.”
His leadership was crucial to their survival during their confinement. He took charge of organizing the distribution of the scarce food and water they had, kept morale high with jokes and activities, and imposed the order necessary to prevent psychological chaos. Once communication with the surface was established, Sepúlveda became the group’s spokesperson. His emotional video, recorded from the depths, showing the miners’ good spirits and organization, moved the entire world and became irrefutable proof that, despite extreme adversity, they were united and alive.
On October 13, 2010, he was the second miner to be rescued. His exit from the Phoenix capsule was an unforgettable moment, marked by his overwhelming joy, as he warmly embraced then-President Sebastián Piñera and the rescue workers. In addition, in a symbolic gesture, he presented pieces of rock from the mine as a gift. His compelling story, along with that of his colleagues, inspired the Hollywood film The 33 (2015), in which he was portrayed by the renowned Spanish actor Antonio Banderas.
Following his ordeal, Sepúlveda has dedicated his life to traveling the world as a motivational speaker. In his talks, he draws on his life experiences and the rescue to address topics such as leadership under pressure, effective communication, workplace safety, and the importance of teamwork. In addition, he has founded a nonprofit organization focused on supporting children with autism, a cause he took on following the diagnosis of one of his sons, demonstrating that his message of hope and resilience continues to impact lives.
