Margarita Barrientos is an Argentine social activist, known for her dedication to the fight against hunger and poverty. She was born in Añatuya, Santiago del Estero, one of the poorest regions of Argentina. From a very young age, Barrientos faced adversity, which motivated her to dedicate her life to helping those most in need.
In 1996, Margarita founded the Los Piletones soup kitchen in Villa Soldati, Buenos Aires. This community dining hall began by serving meals to a small group of people and, over time, has become a mainstay of the community, providing daily meals to hundreds of vulnerable families. In addition to the dining hall, Los Piletones has expanded its services to include a daycare center, a health center, a library and a home for the elderly, providing comprehensive support to the community.
Margarita Barrientos' tireless work has been widely recognized. She has received numerous awards and distinctions for her humanitarian work, including the Abanderados de la Argentina Solidaria Award in 2010. Her story and her work have inspired many and have highlighted the importance of solidarity and social commitment.
