Who is Felipe Contepomi?
Felipe Contepomi is a former Argentine rugby player, sports medicine doctor, and coach, regarded as a legend and one of the most iconic players in the history of the Argentine national team, Los Pumas. Born in Buenos Aires in 1977, his career is a testament to longevity, commitment, and leadership, as he excelled both domestically and in European leagues, where he combined top-level athletic performance with his professional training.
A product of Club Newman in Argentina, Contepomi primarily played at fly-half and center. At the club level in Europe, he enjoyed a brilliant career that included stints with Bristol (United Kingdom), Stade Français, and Toulon (France), but it was with Leinster Rugby in Ireland (2003–2009) where he had his best years. With the Irish club, he won the prestigious European Champions Cup (Heineken Cup) in 2009. He also took advantage of his time in Dublin to earn his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
Felipe Contepomi had a profound impact on Los Pumas. He played in 87 matches, served as captain for much of his career, and remained the national team’s all-time leading scorer for many years, racking up 651 points—a record that still keeps him among the all-time greats. He was a central figure on the team that achieved the historic third-place finish at the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France. He is one of the few Pumas to have played in four World Cups (1999, 2003, 2007, and 2011), serving as a key link in the transition of Argentine rugby to the professional era.
After retiring as a player in 2014, Contepomi turned his attention to a coaching career. He worked with Argentina XV and as an assistant coach for the Jaguares franchise before returning to Leinster in 2018 as backs coach. In December 2023, the Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) announced his appointment as the new Head Coach of Los Pumas, entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the national team toward the 2027 World Cup in Australia. His legacy was recognized with the Platinum Konex Award in 2020 and his induction into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2017.
