Carlos Moya

Carlos Moya is a former Spanish tennis player and coach, recognized as one of the pioneers who transformed tennis in Spain by reaching the top of the international professional circuit. Born in Palma de Mallorca, he began playing tennis at age six and developed a playing style characterized by a powerful serve, an aggressive game from the baseline, and an exceptional forehand that defined his identity on the court.

The defining moment of his career came in 1998, when he was crowned champion of the French Open after defeating his compatriot Àlex Corretja in the final. This victory not only marked his only Grand Slam title but also cemented his steady rise among the elite. The following year, in March 1999, Moyá reached the number one spot in the ATP world rankings, becoming the first Spanish tennis player to achieve this feat since the creation of the computerized ranking system.

Throughout his professional career, he won a total of twenty singles titles on the ATP Tour, including three Masters 1000 tournaments in Monte Carlo, Cincinnati, and Rome. He was also a key player on the Spanish Davis Cup team, notably playing a decisive role in the team’s 2004 world title victory in Seville. After dealing with various foot and back injuries, he announced his permanent retirement from professional competition in November 2010.

After his playing career, Moyá embarked on a successful career as a tennis coach. After serving as captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team and coaching international stars such as Milos Raonic, he joined Rafael Nadal’s coaching staff in 2016. As head coach, he played a pivotal role in the second half of Nadal’s career, guiding him to multiple Grand Slam titles and cementing his own legacy as one of the most influential figures in Spanish tennis.
