Who is Michael Vatis?
Michael Vatis is a renowned attorney and expert in cybersecurity and data privacy with an influential career spanning the U.S. federal government, academia, and litigation. He graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University and earned his J.D. (Juris Doctor) magna cum laude from the prestigious Harvard Law School. His legal credentials were established early on, as he served as a law clerk to Justice Thurgood Marshall on the U.S. Supreme Court and to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, two iconic figures in American law.
His expertise in national security and cybercrime was further solidified while leading the FBI’s (Federal Bureau of Investigation) National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC), where he served as Director and Assistant Deputy Director of the National Security Division. The NIPC, established in 1998, was the first central agency in the U.S. tasked with detecting, deterring, preventing, and investigating illegal acts that threatened the nation’s critical infrastructure (telecommunications, energy, banking, etc.), both physically and cybernetically.
Following his government service, Vatis has continued to play an influential role in academia and consulting. He served as Director of the Institute for Security Technology Studies at Dartmouth College and President of the Institute for the Protection of Information Infrastructure (I3P). His work has focused on developing strategies to protect critical systems and anticipate threats in an increasingly connected world, addressing issues ranging from cybercrime to the use of technology by terrorist groups.
Michael Vatis is a litigation partner in the New York office of Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff LLP. His practice focuses on representing companies and individuals in complex litigation and regulatory enforcement matters, with a specialization in privacy and cybersecurity. He is an appellate attorney with extensive experience before the Supreme Court and federal courts.
