Kristine Tompkins is a prominent conservationist and philanthropist known for her work in land protection and the creation of national parks in Chile and Argentina. Former CEO of outdoor clothing brand Patagonia, Inc., Tompkins left the corporate world to devote herself to nature conservation with her husband, the late Douglas Tompkins, founder of The North Face.
Together, the Tompkins acquired vast tracts of land in Patagonia with the goal of restoring and protecting threatened ecosystems. In 2000, they founded Tompkins Conservation, an organization dedicated to the creation of national parks, ecological restoration and the promotion of biodiversity.
One of Kristine Tompkins' most significant achievements has been the creation of large protected areas. Her work in Chile and Argentina has led to the creation and expansion of several national parks, including Patagonia National Park in Chile and Iberá National Park in Argentina. These projects not only protect breathtaking landscapes, but also help preserve endangered species and encourage sustainable ecotourism.
In 2018, Kristine Tompkins donated more than one million acres of land for the creation of new national parks in Chile, in what has been described as one of the largest land donations in history. Her work has been widely recognized, and she has received multiple awards and honors, including the National Audubon Society's Conservation Leadership Award and the Goldman International Environmental Prize.
