Who is Amaya Valdemoro?

Amaya Valdemoro is a former Spanish basketball player, widely regarded as the greatest female basketball player in Spanish history. Born in Alcobendas, Madrid, in 1976, her career was marked by physical strength, an indomitable competitive spirit, and a dedication that led her to amass an unprecedented list of achievements, making her a pioneer for Spanish women’s sports on the global stage.

Valdemoro made her debut in the Spanish Women's League at just 16 years old, but she achieved international recognition in 1998 when she joined the WNBA, the professional league in the United States. With the Houston Comets, she became the first Spanish basketball player (male or female) to win a U.S. league championship ring, and the only one to do so three times, consecutively (1998, 1999, and 2000). This milestone established her as a dominant figure on the world stage, as she also played in elite leagues in Russia and Spain, where she won multiple league titles and Queen’s Cups, as well as a EuroLeague championship.

With the Spanish national basketball team, Valdemoro holds the record for the most international appearances (258) and is one of the leading figures of the team’s golden age. She won a total of five medals in eight appearances at the EuroBasket, including a gold medal at the 2013 EuroBasket (her final appearance as a player) and a bronze medal at the 2010 World Championship. She was named MVP of the 2007 EuroBasket and selected for the All-Tournament Team at the 2002 World Championship in China.

After retiring in 2013, her legacy extends far beyond her titles. She was the most internationally successful Spanish athlete in history (a record later broken by Laia Palau) and was ranked among the top five European players by FIBA for six consecutive years. Her impact on the sport was recognized with the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sports Merit and her induction into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2023. Today, she remains involved in basketball as a sports commentator and contributor to the Spanish Basketball Federation, advocating for gender equality in sports.
