Who is Cristóbal A. Pissarides?
Cristóbal A. Pissarides completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Essex and earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the renowned London School of Economics (LSE). He has had a long and distinguished career at the LSE, where he currently holds the Regius Chair in Economics. In addition, he is a Professor of European Studies at the University of Cyprus, his home country. His research has focused primarily on macroeconomics, economic growth, structural changes, and, above all, the complex dynamics of the labor market.
Together with Peter Diamond and Dale T. Mortensen, Pissarides developed the theoretical framework that earned him the Nobel Prize: the analysis of markets with search frictions. In contrast to neoclassical economics, which assumes an instantaneous match between supply and demand, Pissarides’ work (especially the Mortensen-Pissarides Model) describes markets—such as the labor market—where finding employment or filling vacancies requires time and resources, thereby generating frictions. This model became a central pillar of modern macroeconomics.
One of Pissarides’ key contributions was the introduction of the concept of the matching function, which rigorously describes how unemployed workers and firms with open job vacancies find each other and form new employment relationships at any given time. This model has been crucial for understanding why frictional unemployment coexists with a significant number of job vacancies, an economic phenomenon that requires a more sophisticated explanation than simply insufficient demand.
His research has had a direct impact on the design of effective labor policies. His models enable governments and policymakers to assess how regulations, hiring and firing costs, and unemployment benefit policies affect wages and employment rates. Recognized with numerous honors, including being knighted in the United Kingdom and receiving the Grand Cross of the Republic of Cyprus, Pissarides is currently co-director of the Institute for the Future of Work.
