Robert Hannigan is a British civil servant, known for his role in national security and intelligence. He studied at Oxford University, where he graduated with a degree in Classics and later obtained a master's degree in International Security Studies.
Hannigan entered the British public service in 2001, serving in senior foreign policy and security roles. He was Director of Government Communications and advisor to Tony Blair, contributing to the formulation of strategic communications policy at critical times for the UK.
In 2014, Hannigan was appointed Director of GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters), the UK's cyber security and intelligence agency. During his tenure at GCHQ, Hannigan led significant efforts to strengthen the country's cybersecurity capabilities and worked closely with international allies to counter global cyber threats.
Among his most notable achievements has been his role in promoting international cooperation in cybersecurity, as well as modernizing the UK's intelligence capabilities to adapt to the challenges of the 21st century. He has also been an active advocate for data protection and privacy in an increasingly complex and threatening digital environment.
Robert Hannigan retired from his position at GCHQ in 2017 and continues to be an influential figure in cybersecurity and geopolitical discussions.
