Biography / Speaker Info
Patch Adams, whose full name is Hunter Doherty Adams, is an American physician, social activist, diplomat and author, known for his unconventional approach to medicine and his advocacy of humor as a therapeutic tool. From a young age, Adams showed a penchant for helping others, motivated in part by his own struggles with depression and suicide attempts during his adolescence.
Adams studied medicine at the Medical College of Virginia, where he developed his philosophy that medical treatment should go beyond physical symptoms and also address the emotional and psychological well-being of the patient. In 1971, he founded the Gesundheit Institute, a free community hospital model based on love, compassion and humor. This project seeks to transform the traditional healthcare system, promoting an environment where laughter and happiness are essential parts of the healing process.
Patch Adams' life and work were popularized in the 1998 movie "Patch Adams," starring Robin Williams. Although the movie took some artistic liberties, it helped spread his message about the importance of humor in medicine.
Adams has traveled the world, bringing joy and laughter to hospitals, orphanages, and conflict zones, wearing his trademark clown garb. He has written several books about his humanitarian approach to medicine, including "Gesundheit!: Good Health Is a Laughing Matter".
Patch Adams remains a passionate advocate for healthcare reform, and his work has inspired numerous healthcare professionals to incorporate empathy and humor into their medical practices.
